My love for essential oils started when my oldest was just a baby, so about 10 years ago now. He was teething hard and was so miserable. I kept giving him Tylenol, hoping it would help. However, as the weeks went on, I started getting this feeling that maybe giving a baby Tylenol as much as I was, may not be very good for him.
Rewind 2 years before this, and we had just moved into a temporary town house in Windsor, Ontario. The landlady had said to us, “We just got the bathtub recoated, so please don’t use harsh chemicals on it. The coating can’t withstand stuff that strong. And besides, you probably don’t want to clean it with that anyway since the chemicals will go into your skin when you take a bath.”
I remember talking to my husband about this right after she left and we just laughed. We had NO clue that our skin is absorbent and that harsh chemicals like Fantastik and Windex do indeed soak into your body and can cause havoc.
So fast forward again to my thoughts on whether or not using Tylenol for my 4 month old was good or not. I was very confused! I was supposed to be making fun of alternative options, but here I was contemplating whether or not these things were good or not for my baby.

I got onto my local Facebook group and asked if anyone sold essential oils. I had been at a playdate a few weeks before and the moms had been talking about essential oils. At the time, I had no idea what they were talking about but they seemed to like them. A lady from my town commented on my post and recommended Thieves and coconut oil rubbed onto his gums. So, I bought a sample from her and tried it out. I remember the exact moment. My baby was screaming and screaming… I took some of the coconut oil and Thieves, rubbed it on his gums while his mouth was wide open from crying, and then silence…SILENCE! Of course, the doubt crept in and I thought maybe it was a coincidence. Maybe the taste just surprised him. But time and time again, it worked.
My husband was still skeptical and wasn’t very excited about me spending $100+ on a whole kit of essential oils a couple of months later. However one night, my husband had either a sore back or neck. He was getting frustrated because he was having a hard time getting to sleep. I hesitantly asked if he’d like me to put some peppermint essential oil on it. He begrudgingly agreed. I put it on and he complained about how weird it felt but five minutes later, he was sleeping. After a few more scenarios like this, he finally realized that it wasn’t just a coincidence but that essential oils were actually very helpful.

I have ordered monthly from Young Living for almost 10 years now. My husband likes to frequently remind me how much money I’ve spent on Young Living, but everyone in my family uses these products on a daily basis. I buy all my essential oils from there, as well as the Thieves cleaner, face scrubs, serums, Thieves toothpaste, and shampoo/conditioner.
Here are the my top ten essential oils from young living that get used multiple times a week in our home.

Thieves
Thieves is the first essential oil that I ever used. I used it diluted with coconut oil on my baby’s gums while teething. I also like using it in the diffuser all day and night to kill bacteria in the air. I also drop it straight into my mouth when others around me are sick for an immunity boost.

Peppermint
This one gets used quite a bit by my oldest son. He’s prone to headaches if he doesn’t drink enough water or has been looking at screens for too long. He puts this on his temples and diffuses it overnight. It also pairs very well with Wintergreen for sore muscles.

Wintergreen
This oil is heavenly on sore muscles and gets used often by my husband. He recently dislocated his shoulder and this has been great on his shoulder and other areas on his back that have been affected by the strain.

RC- Respiratory Congestion.
This is an oil that I buy a lot of over the summer/fall so that I’m all stocked up for winter. I put this on everyone’s backs, chests, and in the diffusers to help with easy breathing and coughing during colds and flus. I try to NEVER run out of this oil. I remember when my kids were little and they would be coughing non-stop after I put them to bed. I’d sneak in and put this in their diffusers. Within 5 minutes, there was silence–Praise the Lord.

Eucalyptus
This is another must-have during the cold season. I happened upon this oil by accident. It was a freebie in one of my orders but I’ve never been without it since.
Eucalyptus gets put in everyone’s diffusers overnight to help keep the airways, especially the nose, clear, therefore making it easier to breathe. No more stuffed up noses during the night!

Copaiba
This oil I didn’t know I would need until I used it. It’s kind of an accelerator paired with a subtle magic potion. If you pair this oil with other oils, it accelerates the property of the other oil. I also like using this for sores in the mouth and even cuts and scrapes for babies and littles because it’s so subtle. It doesn’t sting or burn, but quickly helps heal and soothe the areas.

Tea Tree
Instead of having a basket full of First Aid creams and disinfectants, I just have this on hand. If we go camping or hiking, I make sure I bring it along. It disinfects and kills bacteria which makes it the perfect oil for cuts and scrapes.

Lemon
Not only does this oil smell fresh and lovely on its own or paired with other oils, but it has a secret power. You know those sticky spots on jars leftover from labels? Or how about sap on your kiddos’ fingers? A drop or two of lemon makes those dissolve completely. It also gets stains out of clothes or on surfaces.

Lavender
I’m sure you’ve all heard of Lavender. It’s called the “swiss army knife of essential oils”. One of my favourite uses for it is putting it on burns. I’ve had multiple types of burns over the years and lavender continues to do the job of healing it, sometimes in a matter of minutes. It’s also known for being a sleep aid and for healing cuts.

Northern Lights Black Spruce
This one is kind of my guilty pleasure because I don’t really have a specific use for this oil. I use it because I just LOVE the smell of it. It reminds me of where I grew up in Northern Ontario. The smell brings me to a happy place. Combining this oil with Young Living’s Christmas Spirit blend is unbelievable. So if you’re feeling down and love the smell of spruce, this is THE oil for you.
There you have it. Those are my top 10 oils. It would be a rare occasion for me to be without any of them. If you have questions, I’d be happy to help. I couldn’t imagine life without them now. Like I said earlier, they’re a daily part of our lives and help in so many ways. I don’t dread colds like I used to and can usually find one to help no matter what’s going .
I am a Young Living Essential Oils distributor. I will always give honest reviews of the products, based on my own experience and research.
