Kim J-

Our family has come to love Mediterranean food. The thought that we’re eating similar foods to what Jesus may have eaten is kind of cool—and even comforting. I often think, if we ate like He did, we’d probably be relatively healthy. The veggies, the hummus, the fish, and, of course, the bread (or naan).

We love naan, but buying store-bought has its downsides, one being the long list of ingredients on the back. One day, I decided to make my own, and after a few tweaks, it’s become easier than running to the grocery store for it. One great thing about making your own naan is you get to decide which herbs go in it. For example, I LOVE adding thyme, rosemary, and garlic for an evening meal. If you wanted to make a dessert version, you could even use cinnamon and sugar, then fill it with yogurt and fruit.

Every Sunday, our entire family gathers for supper, usually at my Dad and Mom’s place. One time, I brought my homemade naan. My sister, Lisa, picked up a slice before supper and took a bite. She said, “Oh wow, when did they start making a herb version of naan?” It passed the test! It was close enough to the real deal that she didn’t even realize it was homemade.

Ingredients For Quick and Easy Herb Naan Bread Recipe

The ingredients are so simple, and because I don’t want to wait for things to rise, there’s no rising time in this recipe. But if you prefer, you can let the dough rise.

  • Yeast: I’ve used both instant yeast and regular active yeast and haven’t noticed a difference.

  • Garlic Powder: I’ve come to appreciate the difference that good-quality garlic makes. You don’t realize it until you have the good stuff. I buy organic garlic in bulk from our local health store.

  • Rosemary and Thyme: Again, quality is key! I buy these herbs in organic bulk at the same store.

  • Sugar or Honey: Either one works—just a little to activate the yeast.

  • Flour: I always use organic white flour, but feel free to mix in whole wheat or spelt if you like.

  • Olive Oil: Can we say “Jesus food”? But seriously, olives and olive oil were staples in His time, so when I choose an oil, it’s almost always olive oil.

That’s it! If you want plain naan, just leave out the spices. Or, if you prefer different herbs or spices, feel free to switch them out. You can really make this quick and easy herb naan bread recipe your own!

Heat a large skillet (I like using cast iron) to a low/medium heat. One at a time on a lightly floured surface, roll each piece of dough into a large circle that’s fairly thin.

Lightly grease a preheated skillet and place the dough in. Let it cook for about 2 to 2½ minutes, then flip and cook for another 2 minutes on the other side. Keep repeating, adding a bit more oil to coat the surface, until all the naan is cooked.
